The 28th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards was held last night, and we saw some of the most extravagant and voluminous hairstyles we’ve seen in quite some time. Some celebrities pulled out all the stops, others kept their looks simple and understated. Many proved that once again the minimalist mantra where less is more. We were especially impressed with three stars, Helen Mirren, HoYeon Jung, and Selena Gomez graced the red carpet with three different types of slicked-back hair updos that look as sleek and elegant as they are easy to create.
Mirren received this year’s SAG Life Achievement Award, and it was presented by Kate Winslet. Mirren, 76, wore her hair pulled back tight in a bun fit for the Queen. The style was simple yet elegant and as always with her it defied age. Most notably she topped off this classic with a preppy yet regal Prada headband. This was key as it paired her floral-accented gown with feminine accessories, including pink diamonds by Harry Winston, a Judith Leiber clutch, and even a matching mask.
Next up is one of the stars of Squid Game, actor HoYeon Jung, (who is nominated for outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series for her role in the Netflix series). She chose a sleek braided ponytail, which also made rounds this season during fashion week.
Jun’s slicked back middle part gathered into a tightly plaited ponytail wrapped at the end in an embellished black ribbon. That ribbon was of the same fabric as her square neck Louis Vuitton gown. Many would choose to put that into a bun, but her choice was excellent. The beauty and simplicity of this style is amazing.
Jung was deeper than just getting ready for another red carpet as the inspiration behind the look held cultural significance and ties to both women’s Korean heritage. This hairstyle is sophisticated enough to wear on a star-studded red carpet but easy enough to pull together on a random night out.
Both Gomez and Jung’s hairstyles have a common thread (literally) — they’re tied up in an ever-so-pretty bow, for an added touch of prep.
For Selena Gomez, the glossiness alone of the bun made this hairstyle a moment. If you glance too quickly you’ll miss the black ribbon tied around Gomez’s bun, but the subtle detail adds a great deal of pomp to her overall ensemble — it screams a very rich heiress or impossibly elegant royal.
Gomez’s look has a bit of an old-money feel to it, but she rocked every second of it. It has been a pleasure watching her style evolve as she continues to mature into Hollywood royalty.
